Implementation of a HCI environment on Dell VxRail

Requirements

  • A comprehensive modernization of the IT infrastructure is needed at the customer's corporate headquarters to meet the requirements of the demanding, digitized production environment.
  • The first step was to replace the heterogeneous core with a network based entirely on Alcatel technology.
  • The second step was then to implement a fail-safe, virtualized hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI).

Services & Solutions

  • To implement the first step, the IT experts set up a second data center to integrate a Datacenter Core with a 40 Gigabit backbone and a 10 Gigabit chassis based on Alcatel switches. In parallel, the Core network in the original data center has been expanded, renewed and also migrated to a uniform hardware basis. Both data centers were connected by high-performance fiber optic cables (FOC) and then commissioned by the project team.
  • In the second step, ten redundant Dell EMC VxRail appliances were integrated. These hyperconverged systems (HCS) bundle computing, memory, storage, networking and graphics resources into a single platform.
  • Managed Services: Controlware experts are tasked with operating the Alcatel switches and are responsible for monitoring, update and patch management, and maintenance of the two VxRail appliances.

Advantages & Benefits

  • The use of an HCS enables sustainable consolidation and standardization of the company-wide server landscape, which guarantees significantly more efficient operation.
  • The redundant infrastructure with fiber-optic networked HCI appliances ensures improved reliability.
  • The standardized virtualized server infrastructure makes it easier to implement and manage new applications quickly and efficiently.
  • he project team developed a hyperconvergent virtualized architecture that combines excellent performance with maximum scalability - this is the basis for future growth of Dr. Schumacher GmbH.
