In this technology area we can find some basic requirements:
 

• Permanent  Availability - Financial institutions and large corporations require 100% availability of their data network.

• Highest Reliability – Medical and financial networks require highly reliable high speed data networks designed to share large amount of data.

• Capacity Utilisation - Multiple data streams of diverse applications need to be transported between sites. Due to the high capacity needs, optical fiber must be used. Renting fiber is very costly.

• Privat Network - Govermental bodies requires private data networks which are clearly separated from public networks. Multiple public institutions should share the network to promote interoperability and to reduce overall cost.

• Protection of Investment - Many older cable plants are based on multimode fiber. Previously used with Fast Ethernet or ATM an upgrade to Gigabit is normally not possible. Now there is a solution to avoid costly replacement of the fiber in the ground.

• Future-proofing - TV stations  are converted from analog to digital. The network infrastrucuture needs to support the high HDTV bitrates and it should potentially permit the move to IPTV.

• Secure Networks  - Optical fiber are the heart of today communications networks. A failure can result in massive problems. Furthermore, illegal tapping of the fiber can lead to security breaches.
